Wonderful Workshops in Rajasthan, October 15th to 20th 2010
Due to ongoing demand, JVF Wonderful Workshops are delighted to offer an additional programme of three of its most popular heritage-based workshops in mid-October this year.

The programme includes 3 full days of tuition (10am-4pm) and 2 half days (10am-1pm) in your chosen workshop subject, with accompanied tours to the bazaars and expeditions to places of special interest to your subject. There will also be the opportunity to go on guided early morning Heritage Walks in the old walled city.

This October programme is tuition-based and there will not be the usual cultural programme alongside that we always have in January, but we do recommend that you continue on to India’s most exciting music festival, the Jodhpur RIFF, from October 21st – 25th 2010, another JVF initiative. www.jodhpurfolkfestival.org

Mud-Resist Block Prints and Indigo Dyes with Natalie Gibson, Textile Designer, Di Livey Print Artist and Raj Kanwar, Expert on Natural Dyes at Ojjas

Nathalie Gibson is an acclaimed Textile Designer who has produced collections for major international fashion houses, and is currently Head of the Fashion Print Course at Central St Martin’s. Di Livey is an experienced textile-artist and painter, and is currently Senior Lecturer of Textiles and Applied Print at Middlesex University.

You will learn the techniques of dhabu (mud-resist) printing and indigo dyeing under the skilled guidance of the workshop leaders. You will be able to print and dye your own designs onto fabrics or garments of your choice. A wide range of traditional wood blocks will be available to use for printing, as well as vegetable dyes and pigments such as indigo, pomegranate, turmeric and kassis for the dyeing process.

 

Taste of India: Rajasthani Cooking with Sandhya Kumari and Jyotika Kumari at Diggi Palace

Sandhya Kumari and Jyotika Kumari are both superb cooks and members of the Royal Family who own Diggi Palace.

Learn to prepare speciality dishes of local Rajastani cuisine, including Indian breads, fresh pickles, chutneys and raita, delicious dhal, vegetable curries and puddings. The workshop will be conducted in the kitchens and open courtyard of the Palace by the ladies of the resident royal family, and includes a visit to the atmospheric spice markets and a day out at the family farm where you will enjoy learning traditional village cooking, and much more about their way of life.

 

Indian Miniature Painting
with Olivia Dalrymple, Artist and Illustrator and Ajay Sharma, Master Miniature Painter at Diggi Palace

Olivia Dalrymple is an artist who specialises in miniature painting techniques & has illustrated both her own and her husband William’s books

You will learn about the unique traditions and techniques of miniature painting, including how to prepare your paper using arabic gum and an agate stone, as well as how to grind and mix your pigments inside beautiful shells, prepare kajal for the outline and apply the base paint. You will be taught brush techniques and finally the application of metal foils, goldwork and burnishing.  These techniques will then be used to create your own exquisite individual work of art.

 

Please note: Should insufficient people sign up for an individual workshop, we reserve the right to cancel your booking and return your fee, or offer you a place on another workshop. Should you cancel your workshop booking before July 31st 2010, there will be a 50% refund or the option to defer your place to the following year. We regret that cancellations after this date cannot be refunded. Basic materials are supplied for all workshops. Cost of additional shopping in the bazaars is not included in the fee.
